She signed on with Mercury Records in 1964 but returned to Liberty in 1968. She delivered many long plays along the way and enjoyed a rich career touring and appearing live. Timi Yuro placed 16 songs on the national charts from 1961 until her final appearance in 1975. Other close friends and musical associates would include Willie Nelson who would finance her final album later in her life. Pop superstar Morrisey proclaimed Yuro his favorite singer when he learned of her passing. Timi was a personal favorite of Elvis Presley who often attended her performances with his private regular table where she appeared in Las Vegas during the 1960’s. Yuro was much admired by many musicians and was able to work with Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Willie Nelson and Jack Nitzsche as well as others – Sinatra was so impressed that he had her join him for a 1962 Australian tour, She was given a chance to record Bacharach and David’s “What The World Needs Now” but declined because she didn’t want to do it in the style recommended by Burt. Three of her singles landed on the R&B charts.

Liberty Records wasn’t sure how to present Timi to the world – straight pop singer or R&B artist. From there she found her way at age 14 to a voice singer Lilian Goodman who had experience with Frankie Laine and many others.Īt age 19 Timi was signed to the Liberty Records label and would enjoy a big hit her first time out with the song “Hurt” produced by Clyde Otis – who would later give us the wonder “What’s A Matter Baby” both as co-writer and producer!ĭuring his musical journey, Otis gave us “That’s All There Is To That” and “Looking Back” by Nat “King” Cole”, “Anyway You Want Me” by Elvis, “The Stroll” by the Diamonds, “Its Just A Matter of Time” and “Endlessly” by Brook Benton, “Baby You’ve Got What It Takes” & “A Rockin’ Good Way” with Benton joined by Dinah Washington to name a few. In 1952 the family would make their way to Los Angeles and would open a restaurant where their 12-year-old Timi would sing for the patrons. Timi Yuro was born Rosemary Timothy Yuro in August of 1940 in Chicago to an Italian-American family. Shortly after that session Spector would deliver a quintessential Wall of Sound masterpiece “He’s A Rebel” by the Crystals. Phil Spector! So my ear was not off at all. Well, surprise, surprise! Guess who was in the studio working on the recording of “What’s A Matter Baby” providing his mixing talents? Yep – Mr.

Spector released three clunkers by Joel Scott – Ali Hazzan and Steve Douglas and His Merry Men – none household names – but I am betting Country Paul can add something regarding them.

“Uptown” would follow in February, 1962 – a song with some “wallish” elements but still not there yet. The debut release was the very ‘doo wopish’ sounding “There’s No Other Like My Baby” by the Crystals – their initial recording as well. Beginning in October of 1961, Spector released five singles on his co-owned Philles record label.
